The green shoots of spring
Spring in Melbourne comes in phases. Fool’s Spring. Second Winter. Spring of Deception. Pollen. And then, finally, Actual Spring — usually appearing just after AFL Grand Final.
Ups & Downs. The story of the market these past 12-months
Looking more closely at the market this past month, there appears to be some green shoots emerging. Seek ads nationally were up 0.3% in August, marking two consecutive months of growth for the first time this year.
Victoria led the charge for the mainland states recording a 2.7% increase in advertised roles. This was driven by the resurgence of the Hospitality & Tourism sector, up 10.5% on the back of a whopping 25% jump in July. Also encouraging was the resurgence of the IT market with a 4.4% increase in ad volumes. Tech functions have been particularly hard hit post-COVID. A healthy tech market is usually a pre-cursor for broader hiring activity in corporate services. Let’s hope that this uptick in activity is a sign of what’s to come.
Victoria leading the way for job growth across the mainland states
Anecdotally, many of our clients are hiring, particularly on an interim basis. Restructuring, regulatory change and forecasts for a more prosperous 2025, are creating work and headcount growth. Like many recruitment agencies, we have found the going a bit tougher this year and have re-focussed our efforts on building deeper client relationships, ensuring we are there to support the inevitable recovery. The above statistics are encouraging and signs of an improved hiring market in the months ahead.
